NELLIE FORBUSH (PLAYED BY MARY MARTIN ON BROADWAY)SANG THESE WORDS in South Pacific for the first time many decades ago and they keep running through my head. The following lines are upbeat and she was in the middle of World War II.
But the following lines "But every whiperwill is selling be a bill, and telling me it just ain't so...." always contrast with my feelings about humanity.
It seems ludicrous to compare today to 1948, but there is a fundamental difference. So far global warming has resulted in far fewer deaths, although that may not be true in the long run. However, the difference now is that we cannot, by hard work, restore the Earth to its pre-industrial condition. What is done is done forever as far into the future as we can see. Such trivia as downhill skiing (and I loved the sport) will disappear. Sandy beaches will disappear and appear elsewhere. Irreplaceable cities will be destroyed. However, not in every case permanently. Warsaw, Poland was bombed into ruins by the Germans was almost perfectly restored by the Poles.
But even the strip mine below will never became naturally beautiful fields and forests again. And the mining companies are not responsible for restoration or restitution.
As of today (June 21, 2018) the Koch brothers are fighting tooth and nail to stop public transportation becasue of their large investments in the automobile industry which will encourage suburbal spraul and increase carbon footprints and the thought of harm done from the larger footprints never enters their minds.
Which leads to the overwhelming question of why do the stunningly rich need to get richer, If at some point, say 5 billion dollars, it became customary to turn the rest over to a litigimate foundation, give it away or let it be taxed, perhaps we could live with it.
But instead they, on top of their insane profits, rob the poor and build their yachts on the bodies of dead children who no longer have health care. I just read that the Koch brothers are agressively attacking the construction of public transportation around the country because it would reduce the need for automobiles in which they are heavily invested. There are, of course, exceptions but they are a minority. It is an interesting question whether evolution has failed or our consciousness and sense of reciprocity (aka the Golden Rule) has failed to be assimulated into our souls.
Now, why would I rant about this in a site on global warming. Because it is part of the same big picture. We work to suit ourselves, a few close to us and our immediate surroundings. And the hell with the result.
At this point it appears that the chickens are coming home to roost, and we are all going to suffer.
Roadside on my commute home.
Thou shalt love and honor the Earth for it blesses thy life and governs thy survival.
Thou shalt keep each day sacred to the Earth and celebrate the turning of its seasons.
Thou shalt give thanks for thy food to the creatures and plants that nourish thee.
Thou shalt limit thy offspring for multitudes of people are a burden unto the Earth.
Thou shalt not kill nor waste Earth’s riches upon weapons of war.
Thou shalt not pursue profit at the Earth’s expense but strive to restore its damaged majesty.
Thou shalt not hide from thyself or others the consequences of thy actions upon the Earth.
Thou shalt not steal from future generations by impoverishing or poisoning the Earth.
Thou shalt consume material goods in moderation so all may share Earth’s bounty.
Someone, somebody or something went to a lot of trouble to get us to the place where we even have someone (something) that can create an earth and then create a creature to stripmine it.
